Thomas A. McCary, 58, of 14340 Boney Road, was driving north on Boney Road a block from his home when the vehicle drifted off the road. McCary overcorrected the vehicle, which began to slide sideways and went off the opposite shoulder.

The vehicle flipped over and struck a pine tree. Police told the Times-Union that Karrie McCary, who lives at the same address as the victim, pulled him from the vehicle before it caught on fire.

Robert Lewis listens to testimony during his manslaughter trial in the 2009 self-inflicted gunshot death of his 3-year-old son. Lewis, a former Marine and Camp Lejeune civilian police officer, is accused of leaving his handgun within reach of his son Tyler Lewis.

A jury of six men and six women listened Tuesday afternoon to an excruciating 12-minute 911 call recording at the beginning of the state’s case against a man accused of leaving his handgun in reach of his young son who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2009.

Robert Lewis, 29, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, failure to secure a firearm from a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor related to the Nov. 16, 2009, death of 3-year-old Tyler Lewis. This is the second time he has been tried in the case. A mistrial was declared in March after an Onslow County jury couldn’t reach a verdict.

A former 911 operator testified she quit her job because she was so affected by taking the call Robert Lewis’ now-estranged wife, Kim Lewis, made the day her son shot himself in the head with his father’s handgun.

DAYTONA BEACH -- A 33-year-old Kansas woman run over by a Volusia County Beach Patrol pickup has been released from the hospital, her lawyer said Monday night.

Erin Joynt suffered hearing loss, facial fractures, broken ribs and other injuries July 31 after her head was struck by a front wheel of the county-owned pickup, attorney John M. Phillips of Jacksonville said by telephone.

Also Monday, in a beach accident involving residents that resulted in the death of a 4-year-old boy in July 2010, Volusia County was served notice that a lawsuit had been filed seeking damages and claiming negligent traffic management, according to court records.

In the accident that sent Joynt to the hospital for about a week, the mother of two was lying on her stomach in the sand when a 21-year-old part-time lifeguard made a right-hand U-turn and hit her.

Aubrey Stewart had dreams of playing football, but his life changed forever when a rotten tree limb fell on him, paralyzing the 15-year-old from the waist down. "When I'm seeing children getting ready for school, my son is getting ready to go back to surgery," Aubrey's father said.

Now, the Jacksonville teen's family is planning to sue the city, saying it's to blame. Family attorney Steve Pajcic said the accident happened June 27 across from Aubrey's Eastside home after repeated complaints to the city to have the tree removed.

Pajcic said neighbors asked the city to remove the trees several times, after one fell on a car and another fell in the middle of the road, blocking traffic.

In light of the controversial verdict by the jury in the Casey Anthony case, we thought it would be interesting to ask our readers for their experiences on juries. We begin with quite a story.

Over the years I had been called to jury duty many times but I was picked to serve on just one. It was a rape trail of a 12-year-old girl who looked much older. The defendant was a friend of the family. The charge was brought by the mother of the girl.

It took three days to hear the testimony. The jury was then sequestered to review it and find a verdict. The testimony was very detailed about the relationship of the defendant and the family and the room in which the rape was supposed to have happened. The defendant insisted that the mother had asked him for money or she would charge him. The evidence was overwhelming against the defendant.

In recent years, Legal Aid lawyers have done a great job in keeping homes from going into bankruptcy and throwing the economy further into a tailspin. They have even trained attorneys in the private sector on foreclosure law.

When state funding declined through no fault of Legal Aid, a special fee became available to fill that gap. As passed by City Council, the fee would be assessed to convicted criminals who make at least 200 percent of the federal poverty line.

Jake Coulter of Canton sits in his wheelchair by a 1988 Ford Mustang he has been restoring and modifying. Coulter, a mechanic, has modified the Mustang with hand controls for the accelerator and brakes. Completing the restoration is one of his goals, along with walking better every day. He was in an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down almost two years ago.

Jake Coulter, 39, had been at the races July 19, 2009 at Spoon River Speedway near Banner. He was, and still is, a mechanic instead of a driver. After the racing ended a little past midnight, he and his girlfriend and three teen juveniles got in the bed of a truck rigged to pull a loaded race-car trailer. They had ridden in the back of the truck many times.

Coulter started to get out of the truck, and the others were about to follow, but the driver, who had been drinking, suddenly gunned the truck forward. Coulter had his right foot on the bumper and the other foot on the ground when the vehicle suddenly lurched ahead. He tried to jump out of the way, but it was too late.

Coulter then was pinned under a fully loaded, 18-foot race trailer. "The axles were on my back. That's what caused my spinal injury," Coulter says. He adds he also suffered other injuries.

The sentencing Wednesday for Deangelo Thomas, 31 , caps nearly four months of debate about whether Senior Circuit Judge Michael Weatherby should override a jury's recommendation and sentence Thomas to death.

Thomas was found guilty in February of the 2010 shooting death of David N. Gilbert , 40. Prosecutors argued that Thomas has been convicted of dangerous crimes in the past and should be executed for the botched robbery that took Gilbert's life.

Danario Alexander , but only two were Eagles. It’s a far cry, as McLane points out, from the 30-50 teammates who are consistently showing up in other cities.

Mike Vick organized the sessions, but he has since returned to Virginia to work out with a personal trainer, which likely tells us everything we need to know about the value of the sessions. Other Eagles skill-position players have come and gone, with Thursday representing the low point to date.

Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden hoped to get a shot in the NFL. He never expected his first should would come as an offensive coordinator.
